New Research Shows Why It Matters—and What Parents Can Do About It

For teens, perhaps the only silver lining of remote school during Covid last year was spending more time with family and feeling more rested. Without buses to catch early in the morning, students could wake up later than usual. Many girls I work with logged on to video classes while still in their pajamas—and maybe even while still in bed. Sure, for a myriad of reasons distance learning was far from ideal—and, in some cases, disastrous. But at least teens got more sleep. Now that they are back to school in person, they are also back to their old habits. That is, not sleeping enough or not getting good quality sleep. Fortunately, there is new research about how sleep deprivation harms young people and what strategies may prevent—or fix—it.
