La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls, Oahu, Hawaii
September 29, 2011
On September 29, Dr. Roni Cohen-Sandler presented to nearly 180 parents in the Barbara Cox Anthony Athletics Complex. The presentation provided parents with practical tips and advice to help girls thrive in this age of stress and pressure. Cohen-Sandler discussed strategies from her newest book, Stressed-out Girls: Helping Them Thrive in the Age of Pressure. Based on a national study of 3,000 middle and high school students, her book highlighted girls’ sources of stress, (self-induced pressure, social relationships, appearance and body image), how stress affects girls (sleep deprivation, unhealthy coping strategies, too little downtime), and how parents often add to the stress with well-intentioned comments (“You can do anything you set your mind to,” “Take advantage of all your opportunities” and “Just try your best!”). Cohen-Sandler’s practical strategies included: keeping dinner time sacred, promoting down time, refraining from micromanaging your daughter and talking to her about non-school-related topics.
“I very much appreciated that Dr. Cohen-Sandler included specific do’s and don’ts to complement her larger message,” commented one parent.
“She provided well needed guidance and resources that will be invaluable as my daughter enters her “tween” years,” said another.
With only an hour to talk, many attendees were left curious for more. Cohen-Sandler supplied several take-home handouts, as well as the opportunity to purchase her book on-site.
Thank you to all the families who came out to listen and especially thank you to Dr. Roni Cohen-Sandler.
